Nation/World Briefs

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois reported Sunday raising at least $32.5 million for his presidential campaign from April through June, a record for a Democratic candidate. That is about $5 million more than Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, Obama's main Democratic rival, has said she would raise for the reporting period that ended Saturday.

N.Y. senator pushes for import czar

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., called Sunday for the creation of a federal import czar, blaming heightened concerns over the safety and quality of Chinese imports on what he called a lapse in import product safety caused by unexacting inspections and a bureaucratic morass. "Neither the Chinese or American government is doing their job," he said. He criticized the Bush administration for cutting funds needed to carry out proper inspections.

Agencies slow with FOIA responses

WASHINGTON -- The Freedom of Information Act requires a federal agency to provide an initial response to a request within 20 days. But the oldest pending request uncovered in a new survey has been awaiting a response for 20 years. The survey, to be released today, is the latest proof of a fact well-known to historians and journalists: Agencies often take months or years to respond to requests for information under the law, known as FOIA.

No set agenda in Putin's U.S. visit

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine -- Although relations are rocky between President Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Bush knows what he wants from Putin's U.S. visit: To convince him that a U.S. missile defense system in Eastern Europe would not threaten Russia; bring the Kremlin behind tough new penalties aimed at Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program; and generally defrost relations. What the Russian president seeks is less clear. Both sides insisted there was no set agenda.

AT&T: iPhone problems improved

SAN FRANCISCO -- While blogs continue to simmer with complaints from people who waited months to buy an iPhone and now are experiencing problems activating it, AT&T Inc. said Sunday that the situation has improved. The high volume of activation requests was taxing the company's computer servers. Nearly all customers have been able to activate their phones within five to eight minutes, said a spokesman for AT&T, the iPhone's exclusive carrier.

Amazon to sell HD DVD indie films

SEATTLE -- Amazon.com Inc. will begin selling high-definition independent films in the HD DVD format through its on-demand DVD printing service, the company said late Sunday. The Web retailer currently offers more than 300 HD DVD titles for sale on its site, and more than 400 that use the competing Blu-ray DVD format. In June, Blockbuster Inc. decided it will rent the Blu-ray format in 1,450 stores, dealing a blow to the HD DVD camp.

Iraqi civilian death toll down

BAGHDAD -- Iraqi civilian deaths dropped to their lowest level since the start of the Baghdad security operation, government figures showed Sunday, suggesting signs of progress in tamping down violence in the capital.
